TRIP DATES: Aug. 12 - Sept. 4,'99
TRANSPORTATION: Public bus, incl. chicken buses, back of pickup trucks Very inexpensive.
HOTELS: We stayed in many hotels, ate at many restaurants, too numerous to mention here except for Finca Ixobel in Pop Tun, Guatemala - a great place, food and drinks on the honor system. Less than $10/night per person. Tame, more or less, parrots, tucons and macaw's, horseback riding, caving, swimming. Loved it!
TRIP ESSENTIALS: In Belize went to Altun Ha ruins, then overnight in Orange Walk. Then a lengthy boat trip to Lamanai ruins. To Caracol ruins and Xanantunich ruins in western part of Belize. Stayed at Mida's Resort outside San Ignacio. A real bargain. Then bused to Santa Elena in Peten, Guatemala. Did not go to Tikal as we had already been there. Down to Sayaxche where we took another river trip to La Ceiba ruins. Then to Coban, to the cave in Lanquin and the ponds at Champey. Down to Rui Dulce and on to Livingston on a boat ride. Then through Puerto Barrios for the bus to Guatemala City. Shopping in Antigua. We stayed at Santa Clara in Antigua. My friends left and I took the bus to Olopa, Chiquimula (Guatemala) to visit a friend. Then to Jocotan, (Guatemala) where I useed to live. and back to the U.S.
TRIP COMMENTS: Despite the rainy season, rain was not a problem. A shower here and there, or it rained at night. Pitfalls: we washed out our clothes each night and two t-shirts were stolen off the line in Antigua, but not at Santa Clara. The pools at Champey were lovely and a great place to swim. We saw a Maya dance in full, very colorful costumes in Lanquin. Not put on for tourists, by the way. It was for a celebration of something or other.
