Misinformation in Bolivia

NAME:  Gianandrea Prosdocimo

TRIP DATES: 20-29 July 1999

WEATHER: Good, but very cold by night

TERRAIN: I travelled at very high altitude, up to m. 5,000. Vegetation was very scarce.

TRIP RATING: 9

ROUTE: From La Paz I caught a cama bus to Potosi, from where I should have taken a quick connection to Uyuni. From Uyuni I joined a 4 day tour to the salar and to the mountains down towards Chile - by 4wd. I payed 75 US dollars for the tour, but my travel companions got it for much less, 65 US. I should have bargained.

HOTELS: The Alem Hotel in La Paz was good and clean. In Uyuni I stayed at Hotel Avenida which was too cold during the night. The shower was so and so. We spent the other nights in shelters (I can't find any other word), sometimes at high altitude.

TRIP ESSENTIALS: Good quality warm clothes: heavy jumpers and socks, wind jacket, good trekking shoes.

OTHER COMMENTS: The information in La Paz was misleading because: 1) I didn't pay for the cama bus to Potosi what I was told; 2) there were no quick connections from Potosi to Uyuni; 3) the trip took more than 6 hours instead of 3-4 as everybody was telling me in La Paz in the travel agencies I went to. I also recommend taking the train from Uyuni on the way back to Oruro which sounds much more reliable than what one could think of untill a couple of years ago.
