We recently found time to read the most recent copy of the club magazine and were gratified to see the the National Police had apprehended the armed robbers at the Cross in Huaraz. We were victims in July of 96, and were forced to lay on the ground with a gun at back of our heads for 10-15 minutes. We reported it to the club and police immediately and it seems that the bandits have now been captured. Hopefully all involved were apprehended. Thanks for your part in this!

We regrettabley are quite late in reporting a different incident which occurred in La Paz last August. I guess now that we are not residents in SA it didn't dawm on us to report the problem, but our apologies for not doing so in a more timely manner. We thought it might be worthwhile for you to know the details late anyway.

We were very nearly the victims of a gang strangulation robbery outside the Hotstal Republica one evening. It was only about 8 PM and we were returning by foot after dinner on the normally busy street in front of the Hostal which leads to the palace area. Unfortunately it was a holiday and the presumed normal bustling street activity was not there. A man took postion in front of us and four in back as we walked on the block approaching the hostal. We sensed the situation and moved to the other side of the street and then dashed in front of a lone oncoming car using it as a shield to get into the hotel. Our senses said that someting was not right but we were not certain.

Unfortunatley, about a half hour later a couple fronm the US was strangled to unconsciousness in the same location by a gang of the same discription and lost over $1000 in cash, cameras, cards, passorts etc. They were vary shaken and we later learned that there had benn several other incidents near the Hostal in the past week, although later at night. We do not know if any of this was reported to you.

The Hostal hired a guard for a few nights and the locals blamed it on "Peruvians". Police were contacted and did come to the Hostal. In Copacabana we later heard tales of similar robberies there-from our hotel owners.
