SOUTH AMERICAN EXPLORER MAGAZINE

"A quirky, fascinating blend of serious science, odd humor, travel advice,
and adventure...it's a deal."
-- Tim Cahill, Outside Magazine

The South American Explorer Magazine is the best overall source of information on Latin America in the English Language. Approaching it's 30th year of publication the SAE attracts some of the finest writers on South and Central America and features a wide range of articles on adventure travel, scientific discovery, history, archaeology, mountaineering, native peoples, languages, practical expert information for the do-it-yourselfer and much, much more.

In the South American Explorer you'll find book reviews; travel tips and bargains; news from the Ithaca, New York headquarters and the clubhouses in Quito, Ecuador and Lima and Cusco, Peru; news briefs; and classified ads.

Founded in 1977, the South American Explorer builds on the tradition of the Peruvian Times, the West Coast Leader, the Andean Airmail, and other English-language publications in Peru that date back to the beginning of the twentieth century.

A 64-page quarterly publication, the South American Explorer is in a class by itself among magazines about South America. Written by experts, with firsthand accounts by members and freelancers, the magazine has published articles on Jewish gauchos, kayaking the Amazon, the giant leeches of Surinam, the War of the Pacific, shrunken heads, electric fish of the Amazon, straw bridges of the Incas, sex in Peru, confederates in Brazil, the history of coca, Andean mummies, Brazil’s cliffhanging railroad, and much more.

Travel books cover the obvious—when to go, what to bring, what to see, etc. But that’s just the surface. There’s much more to South America than hotels, shopping spots, and tourist attractions. It’s this that you’ll find in the award-winning South American Explorer. And soon, SAE members will have the entire collection of back issues at their fingertips and can access articles on all the above, and much more besides. The SAE magazine archive online will open a whole new world.

Let’s say you’re going to Ecuador. Here’s a random selection of articles about that country: “Traveling the Curaray by Dugout,” “Treasure Hunters in Ecuador,” “Indigenous Architecture of the Amazon,” “Galapagos Plant Life,” “Biking Ecuador,” “Life of the Marine Iguana,” “Rafting the Napo,” “Bull-fighting,” “Ecuador by Train,” “Fishermen of Sua,” “Growing up in the Jungle,” “A Volunteer in the Rainforest,” “Poor Man’s Galapagos,” “The Last Days of Moritz Thomsen,” “Underwater Treasure Hunting in Ecuador,” “Climbing Sangay,” “In the Shadow of Cotopaxi,” “Stalking the Edible Ant,” etc., etc. Similar stories exist for other South American countries.

Truly the wealth of articles in the South American Explorer is an invaluable resource for the South American traveler, not available anywhere else.
