Teaching English in Ecuador
Choosing an Institute
Some of the following institutes and schools offer highly-structured programs with standardized tests and levels and mandatory teacher training. Others simply throw you into the classroom with few or no materials but lots of room for creativity. Depending on your desires and teaching style, one of these two types might be right for you, but it’s best to have an idea beforehand. Teachers have occasionally had trouble getting paid, so make sure the institute seems reliable and reputable. Reading trip reports is a good way to find out about others’ experiences. Private lessons are often a lucrative and flexible alternative, assuming you can find regular students.
Getting a Teaching Job
A few schools on this list require certain qualifications, such as TEFL/TESL certificates (Teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language) or the Cambridge RSA (a certificate offered by Cambridge University and the Royal Society of the Arts). Many others have a preference for qualified, experienced native speakers and will pay accordingly. In fact, however, competition for teachers is often so keen that schools will hire inexperienced travelers off the street, even on short notice. That doesn’t mean you have to look the part of the backpacker: a little dress-up goes a long way. Be sure to have an updated c.v. (résumé) listing any classroom experience, no matter how small, and expect to be interviewed. Demonstrate your dependability, and your chances of landing a job are pretty good.
